Conception and HIV

Juggling between safety and conception with a partner living with HIV is a concern to many wishing to build or grow their family. There is positive news: research has shown that effective treatment of HIV prevents transmission to the sexual partner or offspring.

This is the subject of the August Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report entitled, ‘Effects of Antiretroviral Therapy to Prevent HIV Transmission to Women in Couples Attempting Conception when the Man Has HIV Infection’.

For mixed status couples wishing to conceive, the report is an important one. Whilst many have been told of the impossibility or lack of safety in conception, the report shows that several highly effective HIV prevention options are indeed available.
