The Birthing Pool in Natural Childbirth

In 1977, a hospital in Paris began to reconsider the way women gave birth.

It was in an ordinary state hospital in northern France, that Obstetrician Dr Michael Odent put into practice his beliefs on the power of natural childbirth. Dr Odent was all too aware of the medicalisation of childbirth and sought to bring it back closer to nature. In his own words, ‘the right place to give birth would be the right place to make love’.

This video-documentary by BBC Magazine shows how the birthing pool and Dr Odent’s determination revolutionized birth.
