Many new moms are opting to take their placenta home after delivery and consuming it as a ‘superfood’. Whilst physicians express concern over this trend, many still point to its benefits.

Alex Farr, a gynecologist from the University Clinic for Gynaecology at the MedUni Vienna, researched this subject and published his findings in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Gynecologist Farr found no evidence of medical benefits; rather, high concentrations of heavy metals were found to have accumulated in the placenta during pregnancy.
