It can come as quite a surprise but research published in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research has discovered a link between lower meat consumption during pregnancy and an increased risk of substance misuse by that child in adolescence.

The study analyzed meat consumption amongst 5109 women and alcohol, cannabis and cigarette use by their children. As it appears that vitamin B12 insufficiencies play an important role in these findings, greater meat consumption need not be a must. Consuming vegetarian sources of vitamin B12 or more widespread supplementation can be an option to avert this risk.
